Today, the forward momentum for racial justice is immense. We’re on the leading edge of change in 2020 and those leading us to a brighter, better, smarter, more just and equitable future are incredibly engaged, committed and inspiring. My history celebrating Black lives started with Juneteenth, first attending, then volunteering, then running an interactive area for kids. Over the years I awarded several youth scholarships to help kids thrive. I have eaten, laughed, danced, loved and learned my way through every Juneteenth. I’ve celebrated in Tucson for over a decade, and even attended in Cincinnati – serendipitously – on the “one year” (2019) I thought I’d have to miss Juneteenth in Tucson due to travel. The universe had a different plan. I found myself literally “at” the Cincinnati Juneteenth event during a museum stop on my way to the Cincinnati airport. I parked my rental car, started walking to enter the museum, heard the music from the adjacent amphitheater area and saw the banner: JUNETEENTH. I was blown away. I am destined to celebrate and connect on Juneteenth. This design is destined to fuel the fire for positive change.
Because 2020 couldn’t include our typical day-long celebration of food, dance, education, scholarship awards and reflections, I took the opportunity to spend the day creating this pendant. As I observed the holiday, I sculpted and carved, imagining the funds and smiles and pride this design can bring. I pictured all the good it can do to raise the tide and help usher in positive change. This power pendant will generate an extraordinary amount of funds and be loved by those who purchase and receive as gifts. They will be attainable and affordable for youth and volunteers. They will be a powerful tool for fundraising for local grassroots efforts and BLM chapters across America.
