Why a Nice BLM Partnership
My involvement began with Juneteenth. First, I attended, then I volunteered, then I managed an interactive area for kids. Because I felt such a connection, over many years I coordinated and awarded several youth scholarships to help kids thrive. Since then, I’ve eaten, laughed, danced, loved and learned my way through every Juneteenth in Tucson for over a decade.
I knew I was meant to be at every Juneteenth when I attended in Cincinnati – serendipitously – on the “one year” (2019) I thought I’d have to miss it. That day I fell into the Cincinnati Juneteenth celebration which was taking place adjacent to a museum I was visiting en route to the airport. I parked my rental car, walked toward the museum, heard the music from the adjacent amphitheater area and saw the banner: JUNETEENTH. Wow, I was blown away. It seemed that destiny had brought me to Juneteenth after all.
In 2020 Juneteenth was cancelled. However, to observe the holiday, I traded my typical celebration of food, dance, education, scholarship awards and reflections for day spent creating this pendant. In lieu of attending the event, I sculpted and carved, imagining all the good the design can do to raise the tide and support positive change. While carving, I visualized the pendants worn proudly by supporters, volunteers, youth and leveraged as fundraisers for local grassroots efforts and BLM chapters across America.
