Why a Nice BLM Partnership
I love this pendant! My involvement began with Juneteenth. First, I attended, then I volunteered, then I managed an interactive area for kids. Because I felt such a connection, over many years I coordinated and awarded several youth scholarships to help kids thrive. Since then, I’ve eaten, laughed, danced, loved and learned my way through every Juneteenth in Tucson for over a decade.
Synchronicity! I knew I was meant to be at every Juneteenth when I attended in Cincinnati – serendipitously – on the “one year” (2019) I thought I’d have to miss it. That day I fell into the Cincinnati Juneteenth celebration which was taking place adjacent to a museum I was visiting en route to the airport. I parked my rental car, walked toward the museum, heard the music from the adjacent amphitheater area and saw the banner: JUNETEENTH. Wow, I was blown away. It seemed that destiny had brought me to Juneteenth after all.
Creating a pendant to uplift felt incredible! In 2020 Juneteenth was cancelled. However, to observe the holiday, I traded my typical celebration of food, dance, education, scholarship awards and reflections for day spent creating this pendant. In lieu of attending the event, I sculpted and carved, imagining all the good the design can do to raise the tide and support positive change. While carving, I visualized the pendants worn proudly by supporters, volunteers, youth and leveraged as fundraisers for local grassroots efforts and BLM chapters across America.
The Leading Edge
Things are getting better and better! 2020 brought strong forward momentum for racial justice and we’re on the leading edge of change. Our shared vision for a brighter, better, smarter, more just and equitable future is gaining ground. Leaders of the movement are incredibly engaged, committed and inspiring. Read this statement by Patrisse Cullors to learn where BLM is headed and why we have so much progress to anticipate. Seven Years of Growth BLMs Co-founder and Incoming Executive Director Reflects on the Movement.
Now as 2021 unfolds, we have even more to look forward to with hope and positive anticipation. Wearing this BLM pendant with my pearls on Inauguration Day with women (and a few gents) from across the nation was a pure joy. I encourage everyone with a taste for change and a love for uplifting others to check out the Facebook group: United by Pearls. Connect, celebrate, and expect positive change. That’s what A Nice World is all about.
