One of the facets that draws me back to Burning Man (AKA the Playa) time and time again are the Principles of DECOMMODIFICIATION and GIFTING. Nothing there is for sale (except ice - proceeds all donated) and that means no products with images or symbols of Burning Man can be bought or sold. That includes all these designs, which have been gifted again and again and again. What a thrill!
Shield of Elytra Ring - Originally sculpted in Precious Metal Silver Clay and worn to my first burn "Cargo Cult" in 2013. This ring was spotted by the amazing LadyBee and earned me entry into the Playa Jewelers Guild, which led to a new design release every year I returned to the Burn.
The ring was renamed in 2025 for my return for Burn #5 "Tomorrow Today" - which took place while I was age 55 in 2025. 555. Love it. The new name is in honor of my dear bestie who inspired my 5th visit.
Elytra (singular = elytron) is her Playa name, a word depicting the tough fore wings of beetles. The elytra are not used in flight but are to protect the more delicate hind wings. The elytra are often colored or decorated with pits and grooves.
I love this. We have tough outer layers we decorate, color and pattern for the outside world. They protect and embrace our inner selves, our true being and empower our ability to fly.
Eye of Playa Ra - The Eye of Playa Ra was originally sculpted as a concept for Geoffrey Squire Silver. It was gifted in sterling silver and multiple tones of bronze at my second burn "Caravansary" in 2014.
The dusty backstory: In 2013 I made an incredible friend at Burning Man. Geoffrey Squire Silver. What an inspiration. Later I learned that for many, many years, he was President of the Oregon Country Faire, an event that knocked my creative socks off in the early 2000s - I had never experienced anything like it - until Burning Man raised the roof. And yet now, the magic of the Oregon Country Faire makes so much sense.
I Am The 10 Principles - This Playa Jewelry design celebrates - and helps us recall - each of the 10 Principles we live by at Burning Man. The Principles are captured as acronyms on one side of this bold rectangular pendant. The "see through to you" cut-out of the Man is intentional, to reveal the wearer from within the piece.
Originally sculpted in 2015 when I served as a camp Principles Keeper. The theme was "Carnival of Mirrors" and I experienced the Burn as a Law of Attraction reader named Mirrora. It was a wonderful fun way to be interactive and give gifts of a game which led to a specific "reading" and charm which was attached to a wonderful keepsake (dust protected) print-out of the 10 Principles I created.
)'( More Playa Designs have been brought to life, including an official pendant for my camp: Bad Idea, as well as a beautiful little homage for my Burner Bestie Tripod. It's lightweight version of his photography logo.
